For my action research project I will be examining what technology program I can utilize to monitor the students' attendance and grades in the extra-curricular program I run in order to decrease the number of lost scholarships and eligibility status.
I would like to implement a program that will benefit the
cheerleaders and mascots I work with, as well as their parents, by decreasing
the number of scholarships lost due to falling grades and supporting
their overall academic achievement during their time at this university.
I will use the cheerleaders and mascots for the 2013-2014 season
(roughly 30 participants) to implement the program I choose and compare
my findings to the dance team 2013-2014 participants (roughly 30) that
will not be using the new technology program. Right now we use a
terrible system of waiting for final grades to be given to us, putting
anyone under a 2.5 gpa on probation, and taking away their scholarship
until their grades show improvement. These two programs are very
different but all of our students are juggling full-time status, while
making over 100 public appearances a year, and working. Luckily, both
of our programs have the same number of participants so I can use
everyone.
I
am going to begin my research within Lamar University. Other
departments and programs like Athletics, The Academy, The Stars Program,
and certain student organizations all have gpa requirements and have
some way of keeping track of grades and attendance. Then,
it turns into a matter of if there are other technologies out there
that will work better, and require minimal extra work for their
professors. I will be contacting other coaches across the
country to see what programs they have in place at their universities,
what they like/don't like, and do my own research online. Once I find a
program that my director agrees to, I will implement it into the
semester. I want to have different surveys for my students, during and
after the semester to evaluate if the program helped them. Looking to
the future, my supervisor and I would like to be able to implement the
program into all of our student organizations at the rec. center if it
is successful.
Here is what my template looks like so far...any comments are greatly appreciated.

Collaborate with my director and
choose a program to implement in the 2013 fall semester.
Seek advice and develop a protocol

Collaboration with the director
will bring new life to what I have already been researching and a common
understanding of what it is we are implementing and binding our students to
for the next two semesters. We will do
some trouble shooting before implementation to better prepare us for
professors who do not respond.

End of 2013 semester surveys will
tell us how the program is performing.
Is there a change from the last three years with no program in
place? Do we need to change anything
about the program before the next semester?
The purpose of the participants’ self-reflection will help them focus
on their main priority which is school.
Are they taking advantage of the program?

Continue program and research into
the 2014 spring semester. Assigning appropriate
study hall and tutoring to students that have falling grades and attendance
issues. Survey all participants,
professors, and parents at the end of the 2014 spring semester to evaluate
the program.

Continuing the research and
program into the next semester will give us a better understanding of if it
is really making a difference. During
the spring semester the students are performing 3-6 times a week on top on
school and work. Hopefully since we
implemented the program in the fall they will have embraced it by this point
and have learned to better manage their school work and time.

I can tell that your plan is well thought out. I can also see that through other post that you have added a few things. I would have to agree with some of the other people who added that the hard part is making sure professors are willing to do the work. I wish you the best, and I look forward to seeing your plan.
